Yet again, more speculation on the upcoming iPhone 5. It seems that a Taiwanese blog, Digitimes, has received reports from ‘unnamed sources’ that companies who are involved in the supply chain for the iPad 3 and iPhone 5 have started their search for materials to be used in the manufacturing process of the iPhone 5 and iPad 3.

Apple iPhone 5

They also announce that the two products are likely to be announced in September and then released in October. The announcement timing coincides with the annual Apple keynote in September, where the new iPods are announced.

Production is set for just the one iPhone unlike what Chris Whitmore of Deutsche Bank said. Whitmore said that Apple would release two iPhones, one for the higher end of the market and one for the lower end. This does now seem very unlikely with sources reporting that ‘Apple is only going to manufacture one iPhone’.

Manufacture of the iPhone 5 is due to start in August in small volumes and then increased volumes in September and October, ready for launch. Sources reported that Apple has estimated the supply volume of the iPhone 5 in the third quarter 2011 to be at 6-7 million units. Copled with the iPhone 4 the expected supply volume for the iPhone in the third quarter is expected to be 24-s5 million units. The same level is expected in the fourth quarter of 2011.

The total forecasted shipping figures for the iPhone in 2011 is over 85 million iPhones! With increased competition in the smartphone market will Apple be able to reach this figures or are they too ambitious? Who knows, it all depends on what the iPhone 5 is like and what the hardware is like. Of course the Apple logo will mean it will sell in its millions but will people be more attracted to smartphones with dual-core processors if the iPhone 5 doesn’t feature one?

Digitimes also reported that the Apple iPad is expected to ship over 40 millions units in 2011, with production for the iPad 3 also starting in August. The announcement of the iPad 3 is expected to be in September also.

So it looks like the conclusion to iPhone 5 speculation will be coming to a close in September, one question that still remains, what will the iPhone 5 look like?

The boss of France Telecom, owners of Orange, Stephan Richard has hinted at Apple wanting to reduce the size of the iPhone 5. Apparently Apple want to make the iPhone 5 much thinner than previous devices, allowing the iPhone 5 to compete with the latest smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy S.

Richard said that Orange was working with the electronics giant, Apple, on even smaller SIM cards than the micro SIM. Allowing for more space within the iPhone. Speaking to All Things Digital Richard said:

“We are going to work with [Apple] in order to standardize a new format of SIM which takes into account our needs with security and authentication and also is compatible with their wishes in terms of size.

“I understood that the next iPhone would be smaller and thinner and they are definitely seeking some space.”

It looks like space within the iPhone 5 comes at a premium. So much so that Apple wanted to get rid of a SIM card all together, using virtual identification instead. This is quite a u-turn considering Apple released the iPhone 4 with the micro SIM, a card with just the chip on. However Orange weren’t too comfortable with the idea, seeing it as a potential breach of customer privacy and security. The Orange boss said:

“Apple has been working for years on reducing the size of SIM cards because they need space in the phone. They even thought about a device without any SIM card, that is what is known as the e-SIM project.

“All of us told them it was a bad idea because the SIM card is a critical piece of the security and authentication process. It would be very difficult for a telco or carrier to manage the customer relationship.

“I think that they understood this point. We had a very constructive exchange and dialogue with them.”

So it looks like Apple want the iPhone 5 to be the thinnest smartphone on the market and are currently struggling to do so. The on question everyone is asking though, when is the iPhone 5 release date?

So the latest iPhone announcement came and went but we didn’t see any news on the iPhone 5 Release Date. Instead we saw the release and announcement of the iPhone 4S much to the disappointment to iPhone fans worldwide. So when i the iPhone 5 going to be released?

At the moment it doesn’t seem likely till mid 2012. The average days for an iPhone is 298 days, we are only 54 days into the iPhone 4S’s cycle. The iPhone 4S was released on October 4th 2011 so 298 days from then is late July. So is that when we will see the iPhone 5 released?

Original May 29th 2011 iPhone 5 Release Date Speculation:
There is much speculation about the iPhone 5 release date. The iPhone is one of the most popular and sought after phones currently on the market so people are eager to see what the iPhone 5 looks like. There are always rumors about when it is going to be released, with the recent availability of the White iPhone 4 many don’t think the iPhone 5 release date will be announced soon.

However this week there have been lots of whispers that the new iPhone 5 or iPhone 4S, depending on who you believe, will be announced at Apple’s World Wide Developer Conference, the WWDC, starting a week on Monday.

The annual event, due to start on Monday 6 June, was thought to be all about Apple software; iOS, Mac OS X and the eagerly anticipated cloud music service from Apple. New reports, however, suggest that the new iPhone 5 will be announced. Journalists from the UK and Australia have apparently been sent last-minute invites to WWDC 2011 from the iPhone PR team.

This news comes a week after a UK Phones4u employer announced that the iPhone 5 (or maybe the iPhone 4s) will be released in the UK on the 21st November. The customer sales representative was quoted to say “the iPhone 5 has been delayed until November following an issue with the handset’s software.” A November iPhone 5 release date would coincide with the rumors that the iPhone 5 will be announced at Apple’s annual September keynote.

The Phones4u sales representative also said “the iPhone 5 has been delayed until November but the only difference between the 4 and the 5 is software updates, that’s the only difference.” This would lead you to believe that the new iPhone will be called the iPhone 4S and not the iPhone 5.iPhone 5 Release Date

Many think the iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, will  have a metal plate back, similar to previous iPhones. This image leaked by a reliable source at Foxconn, the Chinese manufacturer of the iPhone. He said the the metal backing will resolve the highly publicised antenna problem. It replaces the easily breakable glass back that the iPhone 4 sported.

This metal backed iPhone looks to also compliment the rumors that the iPhone 5 will most likely be a major software update and not a massive overhaul of the appearance of the iPhone 4.

This all speculation though, who knows when the iPhone 5 realse date will actually be? Will we find out next week?

One thing we know for sure is that will have all the best iPhone 5 deal once it is released! Or will it be the iPhone 4S?

UPDATE: Apple have announced that the iPhone 5 / iPhone 4S is not on the list for WWDC 2011. Although they have confirmed that iOS 5, the operating system that iPhone 5 / iPhone 4S will have will be announced. This leaves much speculation to when the iPhone 5 release data actually is. Although the September keynote does look like the likely announcement follwed by the iPhone 5 release in November.
